Installing a new furnace is a big deal for any homeowner so it is wise to be aware of the warning signs so you can be better prepared. If you notice one or more of these symptoms then you should consult with an HVAC professional. At the very least you should begin planning for the replacement of your furnace. Be like a boy scout. Be prepared.

  1. If your furnace is 15 years or older it is time to start thinking about getting a new furnace. We are not saying that you should scrap your furnace on its 15th birthday. It may have some good years left in it if it has been serviced regularly but at 15 years it is approaching the end of its effective working life span.
  2. The heating equipment is making uncharacteristic noises. Loud bangs or whining noises are like warning bells that moving parts are starting to break down.
  3. If you are finding soot on your registers or if your furnace cuts off before reaching set temperature. The gas furnace is putting out too much carbon monoxide and the safeties are cutting it off. This could be dangerous. Call an HVAC company RIGHT NOW! The soot on the register could be caused by smoking or burning scented candles regularly but it is still a cause for concern and a professional should be consulted immediately.
  4. If you are experiencing uneven temperatures in different parts of your home. This is a sure sign that the furnace is struggling to keep your home a constant comfortable temperature. It can not push enough warm air to portions in the home farthest away from the thermostat consistently.
  5. The utility bills or cost of repairs has steadily increased. Your furnace is not working as efficiently as it should and it will get worse. The energy bills will only increase as the situation worsens. It is only a short time before it becomes cost effective to replace the furnace instead of spending more money to repair it.

It is best to be proactive. Being proactive will give you the opportunity to make a plan for how to pay for a new gas furnace or heating system before it becomes a necessity. It always fails at the worst possible time and when you are least expecting it. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
