If your air conditioner is not blowing cold air there are a few steps a layman can take that may alleviate the problem which would avoid the necessity to call an HVAC company.
Let’s get this out of the way. If you are not absolutely sure you know what you are doing when following any of the information provided then you should call a HVAC professional. Troubleshooting any HVAC equipment could lead to electrocution or serious damage to the equipment. This is for informational purposes only.
- Check the filters. If your HVAC system can not get the proper air flow it will fail. The blower motor will have to work harder and longer to accomplish the same job and there is a risk the motor could overheat. I realize it sounds simple but you would be shocked at how many homes we go to and the only problem is the filter needs to be changed.
- Check the thermostat. Ensure that the thermostat is set on auto, not heat or air. If it is digital and the screen is blank then you will need to change the batteries in the thermostat. It is more likely that the AC would not run at all if the thermostat needed batteries but check before you make the call.
- Check your breaker. If the breaker has been tripped there is most likely some other problem which caused the breaker to trip. Also, check the switch on the unit. There could be a safety issue that caused the breaker or switch to trip. This is a time you should seriously consider having a cleaning/maintenance check conducted. There is a deeper problem. The breaker or switch did not turn itself off.
- Visually inspect the AC unit. Check that there is nothing blocking air flow. Ensure that there are no weeds, leaves, or shrubbery blocking air from circulating around the outdoor unit.Take a look at the unit itself and check if there are any loose wires or anything obviously broken. Before touching anything it is vital to turn off the power at the breaker box to avoid electrocution. If you are not sure of what you are doing you should stop and call a licensed HVAC technician.
Anything beyond the above an experienced HVAC company should be contacted to further diagnose the problem with the HVAC equipment. There is a real possibility of injury or further damage to the system.
